This is the website for the morning slot show on capital radio, from 6am til 9am hosted by Johnny Vaughn. It claims to be London’s most popular morning show, drawing in millions of listeners every morning. This time slot has been running for several years now and does not involve particularly many new media technologies, but the website has helped to bring the show up to date.
Johnny has had countless big-name guests on his morning show, including Gordon Ramsay, Pierce Brosnan, George Michael and The Pussycat Dolls. Most of Johnny’s interviews are put on his podcast, which is not only one of the station’s most popular, but also the country’s.
Upon arriving on the webiste, fans are given the options to visit links titled as Breakfast Podcast, Meet the Gang, Welshy Calling, Get Involved, Guest Gallery or Johnny’s Interviews.
In the ‘Meet the Gang’ section, each contributer to the show is given a short interview in which they can find out more about their favourite DJs. Questions are often funny and random such as this question to Johnny Vaugn, which represents the light-hearted and fun nature of the show:
Which bit of your body do you like the least?I don't really have a part but my right knee gives me lots of gip.
The technologies involved are the same to that of the Capital FM website, which includes Podcasts, downloadable iTunes, interactive features such as ‘Tuesday Teasmaid’, ‘Welshy Calling’ and ‘Blame Gareth’
In keeping with the rest of the Capital website, the Capital Breakfast Show involves the public in very many of the daily features, including the extremely popular 'Welshy Calling'. Sound man Welshy makes prank calls while one caller guesses whether the call will last more or less than a given time. Johnny effectively tells the caller which is the correct answer by raising his voice on either “MORE” or “LESS”. If answered correctly the caller recieves a 'Plastic, Capital Breakfast Toaster', supposedly made in Belgium and which the gang advise should not be used. This represents the fun loving and playful nature of the breakfast show, which uses humour throughout to carry the show along, rather than serious issues which would be discussed on stations such as the BBC's Radio 4.
Another interactive feature that directly involves the public and is only available on the website is the ‘Welshy Caught Smoking!’ section, in which listeners can send in pictures of the Welshman smoking, which he has supposedly been banned from. This is exclusive to web fans as only they would even know what Welshy looks like and then be able to use new media technologies to send in images of the popular sound man.
It is therefore another extremely good example of interactivity from the producers of Capital radio.
